Scouthouse Interview: New surf rock from Brisbane

Recently, Bravo Brisbane had the immense privilege to sit down with songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, Casey Charteris, from up-and-coming Brisbane band, Scouthouse. On their Facebook page, Scouthhouse describes themselves as “Your favourite surf rock space cowboys and you don’t even realise it yet.” Check out what Casey had to say about the band below!

Portraits // Observatory Theatre

Portraits is a horrifying tale that perfectly encapsulates some very big questions around legacy and how much loyalty we owe to the ideals and values of our parents after they die. It is not exactly enjoyable to watch because it is so cynical, but it somehow feels necessary currently to ask these questions. Driscoll’s play explores legacy and tradition and begs the question: can we ever really break free from our legacy or are we merely products of our inheritance? Observatory Theatre’s production of Portraits moves the audience from their comfortable existence into the world of the Godbold mansion to face not only the ghosts of this family but also those of their own. Bravo!

Up-and-coming Brisbane artist challenges her cultural background in a new art and photography exhibition

Local, up-and-coming abstract painter and photographer, Jui The Artist, will be displaying her collection of works at the Red Bowler Coffee Lounge and Wine Bar on Sunday, 3 October 2021. ‘The Wave’ will feature roughly 44 pieces of abstract art and photography from Jui The Artist. Jui has been creating abstract art for the last ten years. Jui says that the discovery of abstract art was incredibly empowering and freeing and did wonders for her mental health. This art form fascinated Jui as for the first time she was free to embrace imperfection and mistakes through art. Jui hopes that her work would inspire and encourage others to explore abstract art and to experience the freedom to create anything with passion without the fear of mistakes or the limitations of traditional art.

Physical Harm and Heights // Rosebird Collective

Physical Harm and Heights demonstrates the immense potential of these bright, new young performers in a show that is short and bittersweet. The choral work in this piece is phenomenal and executed with such precision that the individual vignettes feel weighty and pertinent. Rosebird Collective is a promising group of performers and Bravo Brisbane cannot wait to see what Pilgrim, Shaw, Cantrel, Allen and Ooi do next!

Cinderella // Phoenix Ensemble

Phoenix Ensemble’s production of Cinderella, the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, is a fun outing for the whole family. Originally written for television in 1957, Cinderella is a musical retelling of the classic fairytale, particularly the version by Charles Perrault featuring music by Richard Rodgers and a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Phoenix Ensemble’s imagining of this classic is sweet, light-hearted and wonderfully uplifting.

The 39 Steps // Introspect Theatre Company

Introspect Theatre Company’s The 39 Steps is an absolute stunner of a production by a new theatre company that is so funny that the audience laughs so much that they cry.  Featuring strikingly creative sets and costumes with an utterly side-splitting plot and decidedly brilliant cast, this is a show that you will not want to miss.

Beauty and the Beast // Queensland Musical Theatre

Beauty and the Beast is wonderfully uplifting, laugh-out-loud funny and a triumphant celebration of community musical theatre. The timeless score delivered by a fabulous orchestra and immensely talented cast captures the hearts of the audience from beginning to end. Queensland Musical Theatre’s production evokes a magical sense of childlike joy, and it is a must see for anyone looking for an antidote to the post-COVID blues.

The Marvelous Wonderettes // Anam Cara Productions

Presented by the newly formed Anam Cara productions, The Marvelous Wonderettes is a refreshingly charming, fun filled musical that takes you back in time to the 1950’s where we meet four best friends as they prepare to perform at their 1958 Springfield High Senior Prom.
